What the Rooftop Solar programme is
Rooftop Solar (Φωτοβολταϊκά στη Στέγη) is a Greek state-subsidy programme that helps homeowners install a photovoltaic system, usually paired with a battery, on the roof of their primary residence. The system works on net metering, which means the electricity your panels produce is offset against the electricity you draw from the grid over a settlement period. In practice you generate power during the day, send any surplus to the grid, and draw it back when you need it, so your annual electricity bill can fall substantially. A battery lets you store daytime production and use it in the evening, which raises self-consumption and improves the benefit further. Because part of the cost is covered by the grant and the rest pays for itself through lower bills, the system is designed to deliver savings rather than feed-in income.
Who qualifies and which roofs are suitable
The programme is aimed at homeowners installing a system on their primary residence, where the grant rate depends on your income category. A suitable property has an available, unshaded roof area with reasonable orientation so the panels can produce well across the year. Residential installations are generally sized up to around 10.8 kWp, which fits the consumption of a typical household. You should hold the relevant rights to the property and roof, and have an active electricity supply that can be set up for net metering. How much you can receive
The subsidy covers up to 65% of the cost of the photovoltaic panels and up to 100% of the cost of the battery storage. The exact percentage you receive depends on your income category, so lower-income households are supported at the higher end of the range. These are maximum rates, and the amount that applies to your case is set by the rules of the current programme round and your documented income. Because the battery can be fully covered while the panels are heavily subsidised, the out-of-pocket share for many households is modest relative to the value of the system. How to apply, step by step
First you register on the programme platform and confirm that funds are still available, since applications are accepted while the budget lasts. Once approved, the system is installed and connected for net metering, after which the installation is activated and the grant is paid out. Project completion for the current round was extended to 30 April 2026, and the platform stays open while funds remain, so applying earlier rather than later is sensible.
