What the Replace My Appliance scheme is, and why it pays off
Replace My Appliance (Αλλάζω Συσκευή) is a Greek state subsidy that helps you swap an old, power-hungry household appliance for a new energy-efficient model. Instead of paying you back later, the support comes as a discount voucher that is applied directly to the price of the new appliance when you buy it. Old air conditioners, fridges and similar appliances can quietly account for a large share of a home's electricity bill, so a modern energy-class unit usually pays for part of itself through lower running costs. On top of the savings, newer appliances run more efficiently and use cleaner, more climate-friendly technology, which is exactly what the programme is designed to encourage.
Who qualifies: the household track and the business track
There are two separate tracks. The consumer or household track is aimed at private owners and residents, and access depends on income criteria, with lower-income households receiving a higher subsidy rate. The business track is a separate channel for companies replacing eligible appliances, with its own rules and timeline. You register on the official platform, where your eligibility and the appliance categories you can claim are confirmed. Because each round sets its own income thresholds and conditions, it is worth checking the current criteria before you assume you do or do not qualify.
Which appliances are eligible
The scheme covers everyday high-consumption appliances, with air conditioners and fridges or freezers among the core categories. Depending on the round, other appliances such as washing machines and water heaters or boilers can also be included. In every case the new unit must be a modern, energy-efficient model in a qualifying energy class, since the whole point of the programme is to retire inefficient equipment. The exact list of eligible categories and the energy-class requirements are set per round on the official platform, so the appliances you can claim may vary from one generation of the scheme to the next.
How much you can get: a voucher worth roughly 30–50% of the price
The support takes the form of a voucher that covers roughly 30% to 50% of the price of the new appliance, with the exact rate depending on your income. Lower-income households sit at the higher end of that range, while higher incomes receive a smaller percentage. Each eligible appliance category also has its own cap, so the voucher is limited to a maximum amount per unit rather than an open-ended discount. In practice this means you should plan around both the percentage and the per-appliance ceiling when estimating your benefit, and treat any figures as indicative until they are confirmed for the active round.
How it works, step by step
The process is designed to be straightforward. First you register on the official platform and your eligibility is checked. You then receive a voucher for the appliance category you are entitled to. With the voucher in hand you buy the new energy-efficient appliance, and you recycle the old unit you are replacing, which is a required part of the scheme. The voucher discount is applied to the price so you pay the reduced amount at purchase. Note that the business track is set to complete on 31 May 2026, and a new generation of the programme is expected in the second half of 2026.
