How to Wire a Plug Safely in 5 Clear Steps

A frayed or cracked plug is one of the most common electrical faults found in Greek homes, holiday rentals, and hotel rooms — and replacing it is a straightforward job when you know the colour coding and the safe sequence to follow. Always check your local regulations first: in Greece, mains electrical work on fixed installations must be done by a licensed electrician, but replacing a detachable appliance plug is generally permitted as a like-for-like repair.

Understanding the Wire Colours

European plugs follow the IEC colour standard used across Greece and most of the EU: brown is Live (L), blue is Neutral (N), and green/yellow is Earth (E or PE). Older appliances imported from the UK or wired before the 2004 harmonisation may still use red (Live), black (Neutral), and green (Earth) — identify these before you begin and never assume.

If an appliance has only two wires — brown and blue — it is double-insulated (Class II) and does not require an earth connection. The plug body will usually be marked with a double-square symbol. Never connect two-core cable to the earth terminal.

Tools and Parts You Need

You need very little: a small flat-head screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, a pair of wire strippers, and a replacement plug rated for the appliance's current draw (most household appliances need a 16 A Schuko-type plug in Greece). Check the appliance nameplate for wattage — divide by 230 V to get amps — and buy a plug with a matching or higher rating.

Keep a short length of insulating tape nearby in case any insulation is nicked during stripping. Work on a dry surface with the appliance unplugged from the wall.

How to Wire a Plug: Step by Step

    Open the old plug and expose the cable

    Unscrew the central screw on the back of the plug and remove the cover. Loosen the cable-grip clamp (the plastic bar that pinches the outer sheath) and slide the cable free. Note which wire was connected to which terminal before you disconnect anything — take a photo if it helps. Unscrew each terminal and remove the old plug body.

    Prepare the cable

    Using wire strippers, remove about 50 mm of the outer sheath without cutting into the inner insulation. Then strip 6–8 mm of insulation from the end of each inner wire. Twist the copper strands clockwise so they stay tight and do not stray outside their terminal. If the wire ends are tinned (coated in solder from a factory), lightly sand them so the copper makes direct metal-to-metal contact in the terminal.

    Connect the wires to the correct terminals

    Fit the brown (Live) wire into the terminal marked L, the blue (Neutral) wire into N, and the green/yellow (Earth) wire into E or PE. Each wire should sit fully inside its terminal hole with no bare copper visible outside it. Tighten each terminal screw firmly — a loose connection causes arcing and heat. For Schuko plugs the live and neutral terminals are the two side pins; for older round two-pin plugs there is no earth terminal.

    Secure the cable grip and close the plug

    Feed the cable back through the plug body so the outer sheath extends at least 10 mm inside the grip. Tighten the cable-grip clamp so it bites on the outer sheath, not on the inner wires — this prevents the wires being pulled out of their terminals if the cable is tugged. Replace the plug cover and tighten the central screw until the two halves sit flush with no gap.

    Test before use

    Visually inspect the closed plug for cracks, exposed copper, or any wire caught in the seam. Plug the appliance in and switch on briefly to confirm it works normally. If you smell burning, hear crackling, or see sparks, switch off immediately and re-open the plug to check all connections. For peace of mind — especially in a rental property — use a plug-in socket tester to verify Live, Neutral, and Earth are all correctly wired.

FAQ

Is it legal to wire a plug yourself in Greece?
Greek electrical regulations require licensed electricians for fixed wiring, but replacing a detachable appliance plug (the moulded or rewireable type on the end of a flex) is generally treated as minor maintenance and not restricted to licensed trades. If you are unsure, or if the property is a rental with formal safety obligations, have a certified electrician do the work and issue a record.
What fuse rating should I use?
Schuko plugs used in Greece do not contain a fuse — circuit protection is handled by the consumer unit breaker. If you are wiring a UK-style fused plug (for imported appliances), choose a 3 A fuse for appliances up to 700 W and a 13 A fuse for everything up to 3,000 W. When in doubt, fit the lower rating; a fuse that blows is protecting you from a fault.
What if my cable has only two wires and no earth?
A two-core cable (brown + blue only) is designed for Class II double-insulated appliances such as most phone chargers, lamps, and small kitchen gadgets. Do not connect it to an earth terminal. Simply fit brown to L and blue to N, leave the earth terminal empty, and ensure the plug body is rated for two-core use. Never add a false earth connection.
