How to Solder a Copper Pipe: A Clear Step-by-Step Guide

When Soldering Copper Pipe Is the Right Fix

Copper pipe joints fail for two main reasons: either a fitting was never soldered properly in the first place, or corrosion has pinholes a section of pipe. In both cases, sweat-soldering (the technical term for this technique) produces a metal-to-metal bond that lasts decades when done correctly. It is the standard repair method used by plumbers across Greece for 15 mm to 28 mm domestic water lines.

You do not need a licence to solder a repair joint on an exposed, non-pressurised section of pipe in your own property. However, any work that touches the main shut-off valve, gas lines, or pipework inside a concrete wall or ceiling must be carried out by a qualified tradesperson. If in doubt, have a plumber assess the scope before you start.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Gather everything before you drain the line: a pipe cutter (not a hacksaw), emery cloth or a fitting brush, lead-free plumber's solder (EN 29453 compliant — required in all EU drinking-water systems), flux paste and a flux brush, a propane or MAPP-gas torch, heat-resistant mat or shield, and dry rags. MAPP gas heats faster and is better for larger-diameter pipe; propane is fine for 15 mm household repairs and is easier to source in Greece.

One item people often skip is a heat-resistant backing shield. Greek apartments have thin walls and hidden pipe clips; a ceramic or fibreglass mat behind the fitting protects plaster, wood, and insulation from scorch damage and is non-negotiable if you are working near any combustible surface.

How to Solder a Copper Pipe Joint — 5 Steps

    Cut and deburr the pipe

    Use a pipe cutter, not a hacksaw. Rotate the cutter around the pipe, tightening the wheel a quarter-turn each pass until it separates cleanly. Then use the reamer built into the cutter (or a round file) to remove the inward burr from the cut end. A burr disrupts flow and can trap flux, which causes corrosion over time.

    Clean and flux both surfaces

    Sand the outside of the pipe end and the inside of the fitting socket with emery cloth or a fitting brush until the copper is bright and shiny — about 2 cm on each surface. Apply a thin, even coat of flux paste to both cleaned surfaces immediately. Flux prevents oxide from forming when you apply heat and lets the solder flow into the joint by capillary action. Do not skip or skimp: dirty or unfluxed copper is the single most common cause of a leaking solder joint.

    Assemble and position the fitting

    Push the fitting firmly onto the pipe end and give it a quarter-turn to spread the flux evenly inside the socket. Position the joint so gravity works with you where possible — solder flows downward, so a horizontal or slightly downward-facing socket is easiest for beginners. Place your heat shield behind the fitting now, before you light the torch.

    Heat the fitting and feed solder

    Light your torch and hold the flame tip (the blue inner cone) about 4–5 cm from the fitting body — not the pipe itself. Move the flame in small circles around the socket so the fitting heats evenly. After 10–15 seconds, touch the end of your solder wire to the joint where pipe meets fitting (away from the flame). When the copper is hot enough, the solder will melt on contact and be drawn into the socket. Feed solder until a thin bright ring appears all the way around the joint — typically 2–3 cm of wire for a 15 mm joint. Remove the flame immediately once the ring is complete.

    Cool, wipe, and pressure-test

    Let the joint cool undisturbed for at least 60 seconds — do not quench it with water, as thermal shock can crack the joint. Once the solder is no longer shiny (solidified), wipe away excess flux residue with a damp rag while the pipe is still slightly warm; hardened flux is corrosive and will eat into the copper over years. Restore water pressure slowly and inspect the joint for drips. A correctly soldered joint will be completely dry with a clean, even solder ring visible all around.

FAQ

Can I solder a copper pipe that still has water in it?
No. Even a small amount of water turns to steam when heated and prevents the fitting from reaching the temperature needed to melt solder. Drain the line fully and use a dry rag pushed into the pipe to absorb any residual moisture before you apply heat. Some plumbers use a piece of white bread as a temporary plug — it dissolves and flushes out harmlessly when water is restored.
What is the difference between lead-free solder and traditional solder, and which should I use?
Traditional solder contained lead, which is toxic. In the EU, lead-free solder is mandatory for all drinking-water pipework and has been since 2013. Look for solder marked EN 29453 or 'drinking water safe' (potable). It melts at a slightly higher temperature than leaded solder, so you need to heat the fitting a few seconds longer — but the technique is otherwise identical.
The joint is leaking after I soldered it. What went wrong?
The three most common causes are: insufficient cleaning (dull or oxidised copper rejects solder), insufficient heat (solder beads on the surface instead of being drawn in), or water still in the pipe. To fix a leaking joint, drain the pipe, apply heat to re-melt the solder, pull the fitting off, clean and flux everything again, and re-solder. Never try to patch a leaking joint by adding more solder on top — the underlying bond is compromised and it will fail again.
