- No — they serve different purposes. Grounding (earthing) provides a low-resistance path for fault current to flow safely to earth and trip a breaker. Bonding equalises the electrical potential between all metallic components so no voltage difference exists to drive current through a swimmer. A pool needs both: grounding protects equipment and triggers overcurrent protection; bonding protects people in and around the water.
- Does a fibreglass or vinyl-liner pool still need bonding wire?
- Yes. Even though the pool shell itself is non-conductive, the water is conductive and the metal fittings — lights, ladders, return jets, skimmers, pump and heater housings — are still present and must be bonded.
