Why Cyanuric Acid Builds Up

Cyanuric acid enters your pool every time you add stabilised chlorine tablets (trichlor) or granules (dichlor). Each tablet delivers a small dose of CYA alongside the sanitiser, and unlike chlorine, CYA does not break down in sunlight — it accumulates with every top-up. In Greek outdoor pools that run from April through October and rely heavily on trichlor tablets, it is common to see CYA drift well above the 30–50 ppm ideal range by midsummer.

Evaporation makes the problem worse. As water evaporates in the summer heat, dissolved CYA becomes more concentrated in the remaining volume. Holiday-rental pools that receive minimal maintenance between guest stays are especially prone to sudden spikes.

What High CYA Actually Does to Your Water

Elevated CYA binds to free chlorine and holds it in an inactive form. The technical term is 'chlorine lock': your test kit still reads chlorine present, but much of it is unavailable to kill bacteria and algae. This is why a pool showing 3 ppm free chlorine can still turn green when CYA is at 150 ppm — the effective sanitiser level is a fraction of what the reading suggests.

The accepted safe upper limit for most health authorities is 100 ppm, and many pool professionals recommend keeping it below 80 ppm. Above that threshold you should also raise your free chlorine target proportionally, but the only lasting fix is to physically remove CYA from the water.

    Test and record your current CYA level

    Use a reliable CYA test kit or take a water sample to a pool-supply shop before you do anything else. Liquid drop tests (melamine reagent) give more accurate readings than test strips at high concentrations. Write down the result alongside your pool volume in cubic metres — you will need both numbers to calculate how much water to replace.

    Switch to unstabilised chlorine immediately

    Stop adding any stabilised product (trichlor tablets, dichlor granules) for the rest of the correction process. Move to liquid sodium hypochlorite (pool bleach) or calcium hypochlorite granules, which add no CYA. This stops the problem from getting worse while you work on bringing levels down.

    Dilute by partially draining and refilling

    Dilution is the most reliable method: drain a calculated fraction of the pool and refill with fresh mains water. To halve a CYA reading, you need to replace roughly half the pool volume. Use a submersible pump to empty from the deep end while simultaneously refilling from the shallow end so the pool shell stays weighted down — never drain a fibreglass or vinyl pool completely.

    Keep the pump running throughout the drain-and-refill so fresh water mixes evenly with the remaining pool water. After refilling, run filtration for at least 24 hours before re-testing. If you are using a CYA-reducing product (bio-active enzyme formulas are available and work best in warm water), add it per manufacturer instructions during this circulation period.

    Rebalance all chemistry and retest before resuming normal dosing

    Once the CYA reading falls within 30–50 ppm, check and adjust pH (ideal 7.2–7.6), total alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and free chlorine (1–3 ppm with CYA in range). Log the corrected readings and switch back to your regular maintenance schedule — but consider reducing tablet use and supplementing with liquid chlorine to slow future CYA accumulation.
