In Greece's intense UV environment, chlorine naturally off-gasses faster than in cooler climates, but a heavy-handed shock, a faulty dosing pump, or the addition of stabiliser (cyanuric acid) to "lock in" chlorine can all cause a sudden spike that needs active correction.

How to Test Before You Act

Always verify your free chlorine level with a reliable DPD test kit or a digital photometer before doing anything.     Once free chlorine is back in the 1–3 ppm range, check pH (target 7.2–7.6), total alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and stabiliser (30–50 ppm). In a sunny Greek summer with the cover off and no stabiliser locking in the chlorine, free chlorine can fall 1–2 ppm per day naturally. A heavily over-chlorinated pool (10+ ppm) could still take several days, so combine sun exposure with a partial water change or a neutraliser if guests are arriving soon.
Is it safe to swim while chlorine is too high?
