Why Pool Water Turns Cloudy

Cloudiness is almost always caused by suspended particles that the filter cannot catch on its own. The three main culprits are imbalanced water chemistry (pH too high, alkalinity off, or chlorine depleted), a filter that is clogged, undersized, or not running long enough, and environmental load from heavy bather use, a storm, or a sudden heat wave — all common in a Greek summer.

Understanding which culprit you are dealing with decides which step to tackle first. Skipping straight to chemicals without checking the filter, or vice versa, often means you spend money and the water stays cloudy. The steps below address the causes in the correct order.

What You Will Need Before You Start

You need a reliable test kit or test strips that measure free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness. A digital or liquid-reagent kit is more accurate than strips, especially in bright sunlight. Have chlorine shock (calcium hypochlorite or dichlor), a pH adjuster (muriatic acid or sodium carbonate), and a pool clarifier or flocculant on hand. A clean or replaceable filter cartridge or fresh DE powder is also worth having ready before you begin.

    Test and record your water chemistry

    Dip a test strip or draw a water sample from elbow depth and test for free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Write the numbers down. You are looking for: free chlorine 1–3 ppm, pH 7.4–7.6, total alkalinity 80–120 ppm, calcium hardness 200–400 ppm. Any parameter outside its range is a likely contributor and must be corrected before adding shock.

    Adjust pH and alkalinity first

    If pH is above 7.6, add muriatic acid in small doses, circulating for 30 minutes between additions. If alkalinity is low (under 80 ppm), raise it with sodium bicarbonate before touching pH. Getting these two values into range first allows your chlorine to work properly — chlorine efficiency drops sharply above pH 7.8, which is a very common situation in hard Greek tap water.

    Shock the pool at dusk

    Once pH and alkalinity are in range, shock the pool. For moderately cloudy water use a standard dose (1 kg of calcium hypochlorite per 50,000 litres); for heavily cloudy or greenish water, double-shock. Add the dissolved shock solution around the perimeter with the pump running. Do this after sunset — UV light destroys unstabilised chlorine quickly, and overnight circulation gives the shock time to work.

    Run the filter for at least 24 hours continuously

    After shocking, run your pump and filter non-stop. For a sand or DE filter, backwash first to start with a clean bed. For a cartridge filter, rinse or replace the cartridge. A filter running only 6–8 hours per day in peak summer is a very common reason cloudy water keeps returning. Let it run continuously until the water clears, then return to your normal schedule.

    Add a clarifier or flocculant if cloudiness persists after 24 hours

    A clarifier is a polymer that clumps tiny suspended particles together so the filter can catch them — add it with the pump running and wait another 12–24 hours. If you want faster results and have a sand or DE filter (not a cartridge), use a flocculant instead: add it, run the pump for 2 hours, then turn it off overnight. Floc causes particles to sink to the floor; vacuum them to waste the next morning, being careful not to stir the settled material back into suspension.

How long does it take to clear a cloudy pool?
Most cases resolve in 24 to 48 hours once the chemistry is balanced and the filter is running continuously. Severe cases — heavily algae-loaded or neglected pools — can take 3 to 5 days and may require a second shock treatment on day two.
Can I swim in a cloudy pool while treating it?
No. Cloudy water reduces underwater visibility, which is a safety risk. It also usually means chlorine levels are either very low (and bacterial risk is elevated) or very high right after shocking. Wait until the water is clear and free chlorine has dropped back to 1–3 ppm before letting anyone in.
