They are compatible with standard 15 mm and 22 mm plastic barrier pipe (the type used for central heating and hot/cold plumbing in most modern Greek properties) as well as plain copper pipe. They cannot be used on stainless steel, chrome-plated copper, or corrugated flexible hose.

    Turn off the stopcock serving the section you are working on — usually under the sink or at the main isolation valve on the water meter. Open the tap at the lowest point to drain residual water. Push-fit fittings tolerate a small amount of moisture but a steady flow will prevent a good seal, so drain as thoroughly as you can before starting.

    Use a rotary pipe cutter, not a hacksaw. A rotary cutter produces a perfectly square, burr-free end in one motion and costs under €15 at any hardware supplier (halkadiko). A hacksaw leaves a rough, angled cut that prevents the O-ring from seating correctly and almost guarantees a slow drip after the water is restored. Deburr the cut end lightly with a piece of fine sandpaper if needed.

    Mark the insertion depth on the pipe

    Hold the pipe next to the fitting and use a marker pen to draw a line at the point where the pipe end meets the outside edge of the fitting. This tells you exactly how far in the pipe needs to travel. On a 15 mm fitting, the typical insertion depth is around 23-25 mm; on a 22 mm fitting it is around 26-28 mm. Check the fitting manufacturer's datasheet if you are unsure — most quality fittings print the depth on the packaging.

    Insert the pipe with a firm, straight push

    Align the pipe end square with the fitting inlet and push steadily until the mark on the pipe aligns with the fitting face. You will feel the grab ring engage with a slight resistance and then release as the pipe seats fully. Do not twist or rock the pipe while inserting — push in a single straight motion. Check your mark is flush with the fitting: if you can still see a gap between mark and fitting, the connection is not fully seated and will leak.

    Restore pressure and check for leaks

    Turn the water supply back on slowly. Watch the joint closely for 60 seconds, then dry the fitting with a cloth and check again after 5 minutes. A correctly seated push-fit joint shows zero moisture. If you see weeping at the joint, isolate immediately — do not try to push the fitting further while pressurised. Drain, release the fitting with the collet tool, inspect the pipe end for any burr or deformation, and redo the connection from step 2.

Can I use push-fit fittings on the hot-water pipes in my boiler room?
Push-fit fittings rated for hot and cold use (check the fitting's temperature rating — quality fittings handle up to 95 °C) can be used on domestic hot-water supply pipes. However, any pipework immediately at or inside the boiler, or connecting to a gas-fired water heater, must be handled by a licensed plumber or mechanical engineer. The fitting itself is DIY-safe; the boiler connections are not.
How do I disconnect a push-fit fitting without damaging it?
Use the collet release tool (a small plastic clip, usually supplied with branded fittings or available for under €2). Slide it around the pipe at the fitting inlet, push the collet inward against the fitting body, and pull the pipe out at the same time. Never pull the pipe without pressing the collet first — you will deform the grab ring and the fitting will need to be replaced. Most quality fittings can be disconnected and reused several times.
