Replace a Toilet Cistern Diaphragm Without Calling a Plumber

What is the cistern diaphragm and why does it fail?

The inlet valve (fill valve) inside your toilet cistern controls the flow of water from the mains into the tank after each flush. Inside that valve sits a small rubber diaphragm — a thin, flexible disc that opens when water pressure drops and closes once the cistern is full. Over time, chlorine, limescale, and natural rubber degradation cause the diaphragm to stiffen, crack, or deform, preventing it from seating properly.

When the diaphragm fails, the valve can no longer shut off completely. You hear a faint hiss or see a trickle into the bowl, and your water bill climbs. In Greek properties with hard water — common across the Aegean islands and much of the mainland — mineral deposits accelerate this wear, so diaphragms may need replacing every two to five years.

Is this a DIY job or should you call a plumber?

Replacing a cistern diaphragm is a genuine DIY task that does not require a licensed plumber. It involves turning off one isolation valve under the toilet, releasing water pressure, and swapping a rubber disc — there is no soldering, no mains-pressure joint, and no structural change. If you discover that the entire fill valve body is cracked or corroded, replacing the whole valve is slightly more involved but still within competent DIY reach.

That said, call a licensed plumber if: the isolation valve under the cistern is seized and cannot be turned; you see cracks in the ceramic cistern itself; or the mains stopcock needs to be shut off building-wide (a necessity in many older Greek apartment blocks where under-toilet isolation valves were never installed). In those cases a plumber can resolve the access issue quickly and safely.

How to replace the cistern diaphragm: step-by-step

    Turn off the water supply and empty the cistern

    Locate the isolation valve on the pipe coming out of the wall or floor behind the toilet — it is a small valve with a slotted screw head. Turn it 90 degrees clockwise (so the slot runs across the pipe) to close it. Flush the toilet once to drain the cistern, then hold the flush handle or button down to let as much water out as possible. Put a towel or small tray under the cistern to catch residual drips.

    Disconnect the supply pipe from the fill valve

    Using an adjustable spanner, loosen the compression nut or flexi-hose connector where the supply pipe meets the bottom of the fill valve on the underside of the cistern. Have a small container ready for the trickle of water that remains. Once removed, place the fitting aside where you will not lose it.

    Unscrew the fill valve cap and remove the diaphragm

    Most European fill valves (SIAMP, Wirquin, Fluidmaster side-entry types common in Greek cisterns) have a plastic cap that screws or clips onto the top of the valve body. Turn it counter-clockwise by hand — or press and turn if it is a bayonet fit — and lift it off. Underneath you will see the diaphragm: a small rubber disc, often sitting in a plastic seat. Lift it out with your fingers. Note which side faces up; the dome or cup shape must be oriented the same way on reassembly.

    Clean the valve seat and fit the new diaphragm

    Before fitting the replacement, wipe the inside of the valve cap and the seat on the valve body with a damp cloth. Remove any visible limescale with a small brush and a drop of white vinegar if needed — scale under the new diaphragm is the most common reason a repair fails within weeks. Drop the new diaphragm in with the dome facing the same direction as the old one, then refit and tighten the cap firmly by hand. Do not use a spanner on the plastic cap; hand-tight is sufficient.

    Reconnect, turn the water back on, and test

    Reconnect the supply pipe or flexi-hose to the fill valve inlet, tightening the compression nut snugly with the spanner (a quarter-turn past hand-tight). Slowly open the isolation valve — turn the screw 90 degrees counter-clockwise — and watch the cistern fill. Listen for any hissing once the cistern is full: the valve should go completely silent. Flush once and check for drips at the supply-pipe connection. Tighten gently if any weeping is visible. Done.

FAQ

How do I know if it is the diaphragm or the whole fill valve that needs replacing?
If the cistern hisses or runs but the float arm and valve body look intact and undamaged, a new diaphragm almost always fixes it. Replace the entire fill valve if the plastic body is cracked, if the float arm is broken, or if a new diaphragm does not stop the leak after two attempts — the seat inside may be scored beyond repair.
What diaphragm do I need to buy? There are many sizes.
Take the old diaphragm with you to the hardware shop. Most Greek cisterns use SIAMP or Wirquin-style valves with a 23 mm or 28 mm diaphragm, but sizes vary. If you can photograph or note the brand name moulded into the fill valve cap, the shop can match it precisely. Universal replacement kits (€1–3) covering the two most common sizes are widely stocked.
The toilet still hisses after I replaced the diaphragm. What went wrong?
The three most common causes are: the diaphragm is upside down (flip it and retry); limescale on the valve seat is stopping a clean seal (clean thoroughly with vinegar, let it soak five minutes, rinse, and reassemble); or the float level is set too high so water is trickling into the overflow tube rather than through the valve. Adjust the float arm or adjuster screw on the fill valve until the water level sits 25 mm below the top of the overflow pipe.
