What Does 'Blown Render' Actually Mean?
Render is described as 'blown' when it has debonded from the masonry or concrete behind it. Air pockets form between the render coat and the substrate — tap the wall lightly with your knuckles and you will hear a hollow, drum-like sound instead of a solid thud. The separation is usually caused by moisture getting behind the render (often through hairline cracks), by incompatible mix strengths between coats, or by the original render being applied to a surface that was too dry, too dusty, or too smooth to bond properly.
In Greece's coastal and island locations, salt-laden air accelerates spalling. On older buildings — particularly pre-1980 construction with lime-sand render over rubble stone walls — blown patches can appear suddenly after a wet winter. Work systematically across the wall, tapping every 150 mm or so with a rubber mallet or wooden handle. Mark hollow-sounding patches with chalk. Once mapped, use an angle grinder with a diamond disc or a cold chisel and lump hammer to cut back to the nearest firm render — always cut in clean, straight lines. Undercut the edges very slightly (angling the chisel inward) so the new patch has a mechanical key at its perimeter. Remove all loose material; do not leave a thin feathered edge, as it will lift again.

Prepare and prime the substrate
Brush off all dust and debris, then check the bare masonry for crumbling mortar joints — rake out and re-point any soft joints before rendering over them, otherwise moisture will track straight back in. On smooth or dense concrete surfaces, apply a bonding primer (PVA-based or SBR such as Mapei Planicrete or Weber PR360) diluted per the manufacturer's instructions and allow it to become tacky — roughly 15 to 30 minutes in Greek summer heat. On old stone or brick with a naturally open texture, dampening the substrate thoroughly with clean water is usually sufficient; avoid leaving standing water.

Apply a scratch coat and key it
Mix your mortar to a firm, slightly stiffer consistency than you think necessary — a mix that is too wet shrinks more and bonds less well in hot, dry conditions. Press the first coat firmly into the patch with a steel float, building to roughly half the total depth (typically 8–12 mm for a standard two-coat repair). While this coat is still green (surface is firm but the mortar has not fully set), scratch it firmly with a devil float or a comb scratcher to create a key for the finish coat. In summer temperatures above 30 °C, lightly mist the patch with water and cover it with damp hessian for 24 hours to slow the cure and prevent shrinkage cracking.

Apply and finish the top coat
Once the scratch coat has set firm — at least 24 hours in warm weather, longer in cool or damp conditions — dampen it and apply the finish coat, bringing it flush with the surrounding render. Use a straight edge (screed rod) to rule off to the same plane as the existing wall. For a smooth finish, polish with a plastic float in a circular motion as the coat stiffens. For a textured or tyrolean finish, match the existing surface pattern: pebble-dash, scraped, or brushed. Feathering the very edges of the patch with a damp brush helps blend colour and texture, though some colour difference is normal until the patch weathers.

Cure, seal, and repaint
Keep the patch damp for a minimum of three days (mist it morning and evening), and do not paint for at least 28 days — fresh cement render continues to cure and is still alkaline enough to attack conventional emulsion paint. Use an alkali-resistant primer before any external masonry paint. On buildings in coastal zones, apply a breathable, water-repellent masonry coating (silicone-modified) rather than a film-forming paint, which can trap moisture and cause the patch to blow again within a year or two.

- Tap the wall with your knuckles or a rubber mallet: a solid, dense sound means the render is still bonded; a hollow or drum-like sound reveals debonding even if the surface looks intact.
