Why wood and tile are not natural partners
Timber is a living material: it expands in summer humidity and contracts in winter cold. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are rigid and brittle. Lay tiles directly onto bouncy floorboards without a rigid decoupling layer and the constant micro-movement will shear the adhesive bond within months, leaving cracked tiles and hollow-sounding grout joints. In Greece, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 35 °C and coastal properties see high relative humidity, the seasonal movement in a timber floor is more pronounced than in Northern Europe — making proper substrate preparation non-negotiable.
The solution is a two-part system: stiffen the subfloor with at least 18 mm exterior-grade plywood (or replace suspect boards), then overlay it with a cement backer board (also called tile backer or Hardibacker) before you apply any adhesive. This decoupling sandwich absorbs the residual movement in the timber while giving your adhesive a perfectly rigid, alkaline-stable surface to grip.
When to call a licensed professional
If your wooden floor shows signs of rot, significant spring (more than 3–4 mm of flex when you walk on it), or insect damage, stop before you tile. Concealing a structurally compromised floor under ceramic will accelerate the hidden decay and create a safety hazard. A licensed carpenter or structural engineer can assess whether the joists and boards are sound — this is especially relevant in older Greek construction where wooden floors above ground level may have been exposed to seasonal moisture for decades.
Damp-proofing is also a specialist area. If the timber floor sits over an unventilated crawl space, or if you notice any musty smell, you should arrange a damp survey before laying any impermeable tiles. Trapping moisture under a tiled floor can cause joist rot, mould, and eventual structural failure. Similarly, if any heating pipes or underfloor heating elements are embedded in or under the floor, have a licensed plumber or electrician review them before you cut or screw into the substrate.
Step-by-step: laying floor tiles on a wooden floor

Assess and prepare the subfloor
Walk the entire floor and mark any boards that squeak, flex noticeably, or show soft spots. Secure loose boards with countersunk screws every 200–300 mm into the joists below — screws, not nails, which can lift with movement. Check the floor is level using a long spirit level or straight-edge; grind down any high spots or fill dips with a floor-levelling compound rated for timber substrates. Aim for a deviation of no more than 3 mm over 3 metres. Once secure and level, allow any levelling compound to cure fully (usually 24 hours) before continuing.

Install cement backer board
Cut cement backer board (such as Hardibacker 6 mm or 12 mm) to fit the room using a scoring knife and snap method or an angle grinder with a fibre-cement blade outdoors — the dust is a respiratory irritant, so wear an FFP2 mask. Stagger the joints so they do not align with the joints in the plywood below. Fix each board with ribbed backer-board screws at no more than 200 mm centres across the field and 150 mm around the perimeter, keeping screws 10 mm from board edges to avoid splitting. Tape all joints with alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh tape embedded in a thin skim of flexible tile adhesive, then allow to dry overnight.

Plan your tile layout
Find the centre of the room by snapping chalk lines between the midpoints of opposite walls. Dry-lay a row of tiles along each axis to preview the layout and check that you will not end up with slivers of tile (less than half a tile width) at any visible edge. Adjust the starting point slightly if needed. Mark your working lines in pencil on the backer board — these are the lines you will tile along, not the centre point itself. In Greek bathrooms and kitchens, floor drains must remain accessible and the floor must fall towards them; factor in any required gradient at this stage.

Apply adhesive and bed the tiles
Use a S1-rated flexible tile adhesive — this is critical on a timber substrate, as standard adhesives are too rigid and will crack with any residual movement. Mix the adhesive to a smooth, lump-free consistency. Apply it to the backer board in manageable sections (roughly 1 m²) using the flat edge of a notched trowel, then comb it with the notched edge at a consistent angle to create ridges. Back-butter each tile as well for full coverage, especially with large-format tiles (600×600 mm and above). Press each tile firmly into place with a slight twisting motion and check it is flush with its neighbours using a tile level or straightedge. Insert tile spacers to maintain even grout joints. Work from your layout lines outward and leave cut tiles at the edges until last.

Cut edge tiles, leave to cure, then grout
Cut edge tiles with a wet tile saw for straight cuts or an angle grinder with a diamond blade for curves around pipe collars. Allow the adhesive to cure for at least 24 hours (or the manufacturer's stated time) before walking on the tiles or applying grout. Remove spacers and vacuum out joints thoroughly. Mix your grout to the correct consistency and apply it diagonally with a rubber grout float, pressing it fully into each joint. Sponge off the excess with a damp (not wet) sponge in a circular motion, rinsing frequently. Once the grout has hazed over (20–30 minutes), buff the surface clean with a dry cloth. Leave grout to cure for a minimum of 24 hours before allowing foot traffic, and apply a penetrating grout sealer after 7 days for added protection in wet areas.

- Can I tile directly onto existing floorboards without backer board?
- You can if the boards are thick, tight, and completely rigid with zero flex — but it is rarely advisable. Even solid 22 mm boards expand and contract seasonally. Without a cement backer board to decouple the tiles from that movement, adhesive bonds fail and grout cracks within a year or two. The backer board adds only modest cost and one extra day of work; it is always worth doing correctly.
- What tile adhesive should I use on a wooden floor?
- You need a flexible (S1 or S2 classification) tile adhesive. Standard cementitious adhesives are too rigid for timber substrates. Look for products labelled 'flexible', 'anti-fracture', or 'for timber floors' — brands such as BAL, Weber, Mapei, and Ardex all offer suitable ranges. Mixing a standard adhesive with a polymer additive is not an adequate substitute for a purpose-made flexible product.
- How thick does the plywood underlay need to be?
- A minimum of 18 mm exterior-grade or WBP (weather- and boil-proof) plywood is generally recommended. If the existing floor is already constructed from 22 mm tongue-and-groove boards in good condition, you can sometimes tile with 6–12 mm backer board directly on top, but many tilers prefer to add a 12 mm ply layer first to increase overall rigidity.
