Rigid Foam vs. Spray Foam vs. Batts: Which Wins in Greece?

Rigid extruded polystyrene (XPS) boards are the most practical choice for most Greek properties. They resist moisture absorption, cut cleanly with a utility knife, and are available at major builders' merchants across the country. Closed-cell spray foam offers a tighter air seal and is worth the extra cost in irregularly shaped spaces or around pipes, but it requires professional equipment and adds significantly to the project budget. Fibreglass batts are inexpensive and familiar, but unfaced batts in a crawl space that sees seasonal humidity can act as a sponge — avoid them unless you are installing a complete vapour barrier system and have excellent ventilation.

Remove debris, old insulation that is wet or compressed, and any organic material sitting on the ground. A clean, dry space is the non-negotiable starting point. If you find active moisture intrusion — water seeping through foundation walls or pooling on the ground — fix that problem before you insulate, or the new material will simply trap the damage.

    Measure each joist bay and cut XPS boards to fit snugly between joists, aiming for friction-fit with no visible gaps at the edges. For additional security, use purpose-made insulation support rods or timber battens nailed across the bottom of the joists to hold boards in place — adhesive alone is insufficient for boards fitted horizontally overhead. Where the crawl space is tall enough to allow access to the underside of the floor from below, boards can alternatively be laid flat on top of the vapour barrier on the ground and a second layer fixed between joists for a combined approach that increases the effective R-value.

    Tape Joints and Verify Coverage

    Once all boards are in place, run foil tape or XPS-compatible tape across every joint and around every board perimeter. This step is frequently skipped and is the most common reason insulation underperforms: untaped joints allow air to bypass the insulation layer entirely. Walk the entire perimeter with a torch and check for any areas of missing coverage, particularly around structural columns, inspection hatches, and service runs. Once you are satisfied with coverage, replace any ventilation screens or access doors, verify that crawl space vents are functional (or intentionally sealed if you are creating a conditioned crawl space), and document the installation with photographs for future maintenance records.

It depends on the strategy you choose. A vented crawl space relies on airflow to carry moisture out, which means insulation goes between the floor joists above, not on the walls or ground. An encapsulated (conditioned) crawl space has sealed walls, a vapour barrier on the ground, and no vents — insulation goes on the walls. In Greece, encapsulation generally performs better for older villas and ground-floor apartments because outdoor summer air is often more humid than the controlled interior air, so ventilating a crawl space in August can actually introduce more moisture than it removes.
What R-value do I need for a crawl space floor in Greece?
