    Clean the glass thoroughly

    Start with a lint-free microfibre cloth and a proprietary glass cleaner or a diluted dish-soap solution. Remove every trace of grease, dust, and mineral deposit — especially on properties near the coast where salt residue is common. Any particle left under the film will create a bubble or imperfection that is impossible to fix after the film cures. Wipe the frame edges too, as adhesive picks up debris from the surrounding surface during installation.

    Measure and cut the film to size

    Measure the pane width and height, then cut the film 10–15 mm larger on each dimension. Working oversized gives you a margin to trim flush once the film is positioned. Use a steel ruler and a new blade in a sharp utility knife — a blunt blade will stretch the film edge and cause lifting. Label each cut piece with a marker on the backing liner so you do not mix up panels on multi-window jobs.

    Prepare the slip solution and wet the glass

    Fill a clean spray bottle with water and add two or three drops of baby shampoo or dish soap. This soapy slip solution allows you to reposition the film on the wet glass before it bonds. Spray the pane generously until water runs down; do not let it dry out during installation. Spray your own hands lightly too — it prevents fingerprints on the adhesive side of the film as you peel and handle it.

    Apply the film and squeegee out all water

    Peel the backing liner from the film while a second person keeps the adhesive side wet with the slip solution. Lay the film onto the wet glass and slide it into position — you have a minute or two to adjust before adhesion begins. Starting from the centre, press a hard rubber squeegee firmly outward in overlapping strokes toward each edge to push water and air out from under the film. Work methodically; do not lift and re-lay once the film starts to grip.

    Trim the edges and allow the film to cure

    With the film held flat by the squeegee pressure, use the utility knife guided along a steel ruler to trim the excess at each edge, leaving a 1–2 mm gap from the frame to allow for thermal expansion. Run the squeegee one final time over the full surface to expel any remaining moisture. The film will appear slightly hazy or show small water pockets for the first two to four weeks — this is normal and disappears as the adhesive fully cures. Avoid aggressive cleaning of the surface during this period.

Will the film damage double-pane windows?
Standard heat-reflective films are safe on most double-pane (insulating glass unit) windows, but check the manufacturer's compatibility list before buying. Films with very high heat-absorption characteristics can raise the glass temperature enough to stress the seals in some IGUs; choosing a film with a neutral solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) rather than a high-absorption tint minimises this risk.
