How to Install Plinth Lighting: A Step-by-Step Guide

The only part that requires a licensed electrician is connecting or installing a new mains-side power outlet or hardwired driver inside a wall or cabinet.
What You Need to Know Before You Start
Greece's electrical safety regulations (ELOT EN 60364 series) require that any new fixed mains connection — a socket outlet inside a cabinet, a hardwired transformer, or a spur off an existing circuit — must be carried out or supervised by a licensed electrician (αδειούχος ηλεκτρολόγος) and covered by a Δ.Υ.Π.Ε.Ε. certificate of compliance. If an existing socket is already accessible inside the cabinet, you can plug a low-voltage driver into it yourself and handle everything from the driver onwards without a licence.
Buy IP44-rated LED strip for kitchen plinths — the rating protects against splashes from mopping. A warm white colour temperature (2700–3000 K) suits most residential kitchens, while a neutral white (4000 K) works well in commercial or hotel settings. How to Install Plinth Lighting

Remove the plinth panels and plan your run
Plinth panels clip or slide into small plastic clips at the base of the cabinets. Remove each one carefully. Lay them on a flat surface and measure the total length of your run. Note any corners — you will need corner connectors or you will need to cut and rejoin the strip at 45-degree mitres. Sketch out where the driver will sit and which direction the cable will route to reach it; ideally it exits at one end, hidden behind the last panel or inside an end cabinet.

Cut and fit the aluminium channel
Cut the aluminium diffuser channel to match each panel section using a junior hacksaw or mitre saw. The channel protects the strip, conducts heat away, and turns the point-source LEDs into a continuous glowing line. Test-fit each length inside the plinth cavity before removing the adhesive backing. In most toekicks there is 50–80 mm of depth, which is more than enough.

Stick down the LED strip inside the channel
Clean the inside of the channel with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Peel the 3M backing from the LED strip and press it firmly into the channel. At corners, use a solderless L-shaped connector rather than bending the strip, as bending stresses the copper pads and causes early failure. Clip the translucent diffuser cover onto the channel — this is the piece that gives you the smooth, even glow rather than a dotted light effect.

Connect the driver and test before fixing
Run the low-voltage cable from the strip back to the driver location. Most plug-in drivers use a barrel connector; simply plug the strip's lead into the driver output. DO NOT connect the driver to mains power yet. Once all sections are joined and the channels are lying in position on the floor, plug in the driver to test every run. Check for dark patches (a loose connector) or sections that fail to light (wrong polarity on a push-in connector — flip it). This is the time to fix problems, not after the panels are refitted.

Fix the channels, refit the plinths, and tidy the cabling
Once everything tests correctly, peel any remaining protective film from the diffuser. Secure each aluminium channel to the back of the plinth panel using the channel's fixing clips or a bead of clear silicone — this makes future removal easy. Feed the mains lead discreetly through the inside of the end cabinet to the socket or driver. Use cable clips to keep the low-voltage wiring tidy and clear of the floor where it could be snagged during cleaning. Refit the plinth panels. If your installation requires a new socket, a hardwired driver, or any mains-side work at this stage, call a licensed electrician before proceeding.
