Low-voltage vs. mains-voltage deck lighting

Most deck lighting sold today runs on 12 V DC through a dedicated low-voltage transformer. This is the safe, DIY-friendly category: LED step lights, post-cap lights, deck-board spotlights, and stair riser strips. The transformer plugs into a standard outdoor socket, and all wiring beyond that point carries only 12 V — a level that does not deliver a dangerous shock and is not regulated as mains electrical work in most jurisdictions.

Mains-voltage systems (230 V in Greece) are a different matter. Running a new circuit from your consumer unit to an outdoor socket or a hardwired lighting point legally requires a licensed electrician (ηλεκτρολόγος εγκαταστάτης) and an inspection certificate (ΥΔΕ). If your deck has no outdoor socket at all, arranging that supply is your starting point — and it must go through a professional.

Planning your layout before you buy anything

Sketch your deck to scale and mark every feature you want to light: stair risers, post tops, the perimeter board, and any pathway across the deck surface. Count fixtures and measure cable runs back to the transformer location. Most low-voltage transformers are rated in watts; add up the wattage of every fixture you plan to use and choose a transformer rated at least 20 % above that total to avoid overload and premature failure.

In Greece's climate — high summer heat and salt air near the coast — choose fixtures with an IP65 rating or higher. This means the housing is fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. Stainless-steel or marine-grade aluminium housings resist the corrosion that can destroy cheaper brass or zinc-alloy fittings within a single season.

    Mark fixture positions and drill housing holes

    Hold each fixture against its intended surface and trace the cutout or drill-point in pencil. For step-riser lights, space them evenly — one per riser looks cleaner than alternating sides on narrow stairs. Use a hole saw or spade bit matched to the fixture's housing diameter. Drill at a slight downward angle into hollow deck posts or riser boards so rainwater cannot pool inside the housing cavity.

    Route the low-voltage cable

    Feed the 12 V cable from the transformer location to each fixture before you mount anything permanently. Use cable staples or clips rated for outdoor use and keep the cable tucked behind fascia boards or inside post cavities where possible. Leave 150–200 mm of slack at each fixture point so you can connect and, if needed, later remove the fitting without cutting the cable short. Never route low-voltage cable through the same conduit as a mains supply cable.

    Connect fixtures and seal entries

    Most low-voltage deck light connectors are tool-free: pierce-and-press or push-in types that bite into the cable insulation. Confirm polarity (positive to positive, marked with a ridge or colour stripe on the cable) before pressing the connector home. Once connected, push the fixture into its housing and secure it with the supplied screws or locking collar. Apply a thin bead of outdoor-grade silicone around the flange where the fitting meets the board to prevent water ingress behind the face plate.

    Install the transformer and connect the run

    Mount the transformer in a sheltered position — inside a post, under the deck, or inside a weatherproof enclosure — close to the outdoor socket that will power it. Connect the low-voltage cable run to the transformer's output terminals, observing polarity. Plug the transformer into the outdoor socket and switch it on. Walk the deck and verify every fixture lights correctly before you close up any cavities or apply final trim boards.

    Set the timer or smart-control schedule

    Most transformers include a built-in photocell (dusk-on/dawn-off) or a 24-hour dial timer. For holiday rentals and hotels, a smart timer or Wi-Fi-enabled transformer lets you set schedules remotely and saves electricity during quiet periods. Set the dusk sensor threshold in summer (when Greek sunsets are late) to avoid lights coming on at full daylight. Test the timer across two full on-off cycles before considering the job done.
