What Is a Suspended Ceiling?
A suspended ceiling consists of a lightweight metal grid that hangs from the structural ceiling above on wire hangers, with mineral-fibre, gypsum, or PVC panels dropped into the grid openings. The finished surface sits anything from 5 cm to 30 cm below the original ceiling, creating a concealed service void for cables, pipes, and insulation.
In Greece the system is common in apartments and commercial spaces, and it suits Mediterranean climates well because the void can accommodate acoustic insulation or reflective thermal foil without altering the building structure. Standard grids follow a 60 × 60 cm or 60 × 120 cm module — both are widely available at building-supply stores (Praktiker, Leroy Merlin Hellas, and local tile merchants).
Before You Start: Permits, Safety, and When to Call a Pro
A cosmetic suspended ceiling in a living area, bedroom, or hotel corridor does not require a building permit in Greece — the Regulations on Building Activity (ΚΒΠ) treat it as decorative fit-out. However, if you plan to cut into or lower the ceiling in a way that touches load-bearing concrete (e.g. drilling anchor points into a post-tensioned slab), consult a civil engineer first. The same applies to any bathroom or wet-room installation where damp-proofing the void is essential; a licensed waterproofing contractor should seal the slab above before you hang the grid.
Electrical work inside the void — recessed LED downlights, data cable trays, or fan coil units — must be handled by a licensed electrician (αδειούχος ηλεκτρολόγος). They must also sign off the circuit before you close the ceiling. Gas lines must never pass through an unventilated suspended-ceiling void under Greek/EU building codes; if gas pipework runs above the original ceiling, have a licensed plumber reroute or sleeve it before proceeding.
How to Install a Suspended Ceiling: Step by Step

Measure, plan, and mark the drop height
Decide how far below the original ceiling you want the new surface. Allow at least 10 cm to clear any pipework and fit the hanger wires; allow 20 cm or more if you are fitting recessed downlights (LED modules typically need 12–15 cm above the panel). Snap a chalk line around all four walls at the chosen height using a laser level — precision here saves hours later. Mark the position of every ceiling joist or anchor point on the concrete above; in Greek concrete-slab construction you will typically drill M6 or M8 rawl bolts into the slab for the wire hangers.

Fix the perimeter wall angle
Cut the L-shaped wall angle (angolare, sold in 3 m lengths) to fit the perimeter using tin snips, mitre the corners at 45°, and screw it to the wall through the chalk line every 30–40 cm using 6 × 50 mm wall plugs and screws. The horizontal flange must be level all the way round — re-check with a laser or spirit level after fixing each length, because this angle is the foundation of the entire grid.

Install hanger wires and main runners
Drill anchor points into the slab at 120 cm intervals along each main-runner line (main runners run the length of the room and are spaced 60 cm apart). Insert M6 eye bolts or proprietary ceiling anchors, then loop 1.2 mm galvanised hanger wire through each eye and twist it tight. Hold the main runner at the finished height and thread the wire through the runner's pre-punched holes, bending the tail back at 90° and twisting three times. Work across the room in parallel rows, cutting runners to length with tin snips where they meet the wall angle, resting the cut end on the wall angle flange.

Clip in the cross tees
Cross tees (also called secondary runners) clip perpendicularly into the pre-cut slots in the main runners at 60 cm intervals, completing the 60 × 60 cm or 60 × 120 cm grid modules. They click in without tools — press the locking tab into the main runner slot until you hear a click. At the perimeter, cut cross tees to span from the last full main runner to the wall angle; the cut end rests on the wall angle. Step back and check the grid is flat using a taut string line or laser across the room, and adjust any hanger wires that are pulling a runner out of level.

Drop in the ceiling panels
Lift each panel diagonally up through the grid opening (it will not fit flat through), then lower it flat onto the flanges of the grid. Do not force panels — if a tile does not sit flush, the grid is slightly out of square and you should re-tension the nearest hanger wire rather than bending the tile. For border panels, score the back of a mineral-fibre tile with a sharp knife and snap it over the scored line; PVC tiles are best cut with a fine-toothed saw. Once all panels are in, install any agreed recessed fittings by cutting the panel opening with a hole saw before dropping the panel into place, then have your electrician make the final connections.
