A heat alarm responds to a rise in ambient temperature — either a fixed threshold (typically 58 °C for a Type A1S device) or a rapid rate-of-rise — making it far more reliable in kitchens, garages, boiler rooms, and loft spaces where smoke or steam would cause unwanted alerts.

Greek fire-safety regulations and the European standard EN 14604 (for smoke alarms) and EN 54-5 (for point heat detectors used in larger systems) both inform best practice. For standalone residential heat alarms the relevant benchmark is BS 5446-2, which is widely adopted by manufacturers sold in Europe. Battery-Powered vs Mains-Wired Heat Alarms

Most heat alarms sold for homes and holiday rentals run on a sealed long-life battery (typically 10 years) and require no electrical qualification to fit — you are simply screwing a plastic base to the ceiling. This is the type covered in the steps below and demonstrated in the video.

Mains-powered heat alarms (230 V AC, with battery backup) must be wired into a dedicated spur or a ring circuit by a licensed electrician. Installing a Battery-Powered Heat Alarm: 5 Steps

    Choose the right location on the ceiling

    Mount the alarm on the ceiling as close to the centre of the room as practical. Keep it at least 300 mm (30 cm) from any wall or light fitting — the 'dead air' zone at the junction of ceiling and wall traps heat poorly. For kitchens, also keep it at least 1 m away from the hob or oven to avoid nuisance triggers from normal cooking peaks. If the room is larger than 25 m², check the manufacturer's spacing table; you may need two units.

    Mark and drill the fixing holes

    Hold the mounting base against the ceiling at your chosen point and use a pencil to mark the screw holes — usually two or three, set on a small circle. Drill pilot holes with a 5 mm masonry bit if your ceiling is concrete or render (common in Greek construction). Insert the supplied wall plugs. If you hit a joist in a timber ceiling, you can screw directly into it without a plug.

    Cable the interconnect wire if required (optional)

    Some battery alarms support a wireless or wired interconnect so that when one triggers, all units in the property sound together — useful for villas and multi-room rentals. Wired interconnect uses a low-voltage signal wire (not mains) that you can run yourself through a cable channel or along a skirting route, but plan this before fixing the base permanently. Wireless RF interconnect requires no wire at all — simply pair the units according to the manual after mounting.

    Fix the base and attach the alarm head

    Screw the mounting base firmly to the ceiling using the provided screws. Most modern heat alarms use a twist-and-lock mechanism: align the alarm head with the bayonet lugs on the base, push up gently, and rotate clockwise (typically 30–45 degrees) until you feel it click into place. Pull down lightly to confirm it is locked. Insert or activate the battery tab if the unit shipped with a pull-strip isolator.

    Test, label, and log the installation

    Press and hold the test button for 3–5 seconds until the alarm sounds a full alert pattern. Release and confirm it stops. For rental properties in Greece, note the installation date, the device model and serial number, and the next recommended test/replacement date in your property maintenance log. Repeat the push-button test monthly and replace the entire unit at the end of its rated life (usually 10 years) — do not attempt to replace only the battery in a sealed-battery unit.

Can I install a heat alarm myself or do I need an electrician in Greece?
For battery-operated standalone heat alarms the work is entirely mechanical — drilling, plugging, and screwing — so no electrical licence is required. The moment the alarm connects to a 230 V mains supply (or to an existing wired fire-alarm system), you must use a licensed electrician (ηλεκτρολόγος) who can certify the installation.
Where should I NOT put a heat alarm?
Avoid placing heat alarms in rooms that already have a smoke alarm doing the same job — you do not need both in the same space. Do not fit one in a bathroom where steam spikes could cause nuisance trips, in a garage with a gas heater operating nearby (use a CO alarm there instead), or in an unventilated roof void where ambient temperatures can routinely exceed the alarm's threshold even without a fire.
How is a heat alarm different from a smoke detector for a holiday rental in Greece?
Greek short-term rental regulations (and good practice for Airbnb/Booking.com listings) require both a smoke alarm in sleeping areas and corridors, and a heat alarm in the kitchen. A smoke detector in a kitchen would trigger constantly from normal cooking activity, leading guests to disable it — which defeats the purpose. The heat alarm ignores cooking steam and fumes but responds reliably when a fire actually develops.
