The adult beetles themselves cause little harm; it is their larvae, which can live for up to a year, that destroy textiles and stored goods.
Greece's Mediterranean climate creates near-ideal breeding conditions: warm indoor temperatures year-round, seasonal dust build-up in closed villas, and an abundance of wool rugs and linen kept in storage. How to Spot an Infestation Before It Gets Serious

Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and go slowly over all carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, curtains, skirting boards, and the gaps beneath furniture. The suction removes live larvae, eggs, and the shed skins that serve as a food source. Empty the canister or bag immediately into a sealed plastic bag and dispose of it outside. Repeat this step every two to three days for the first two weeks.

Wash and heat-treat all affected textiles
Machine-wash any clothing, bedding, or soft furnishings you can at 60 °C or higher — this temperature kills all life stages reliably. Items that cannot be washed (delicate rugs, wool blankets) should be placed in sealed bags and put in a chest freezer at -18 °C for at least 72 hours, which achieves the same effect without risking shrinkage or colour loss.

A steam cleaner produces temperatures above 120 °C at the nozzle, penetrating carpet pile and upholstery seams where larvae hide. Work methodically in overlapping passes, paying extra attention to edges, seams, and folds. Apply a targeted insecticide or diatomaceous earth
For persistent infestations, treat skirting boards, carpet edges, wardrobe bases, and the interior of air vents with a residual insecticide containing deltamethrin or cypermethrin — both are readily available in Greek hardware stores (χρωματοπωλεία). Alternatively, dust diatomaceous earth (food-grade) into voids and along baseboards; it dehydrates larvae on contact and leaves no harmful residue. Adult beetles enter through open windows and doors on flowers and pollen they collect outdoors. Fit fine mesh screens on windows and inspect any cut flowers or dried arrangements brought indoors.
