How to Fit Coving: A Clean Finish for Every Room

For holiday rentals or high-humidity rooms such as bathrooms, moisture-resistant polyurethane outlasts plaster and needs no special sealer.
Profile size matters too. A 90 mm or 100 mm profile suits standard 2.4 m residential ceilings; larger 127 mm or 135 mm profiles work in rooms with higher ceilings or where you want a more classical look. Always buy 10–15 % more length than your room perimeter to allow for waste at corners and inevitable mis-cuts.

How to Fit Coving: Step by Step

Mark the guide lines
Measure the depth of your coving profile — the distance it sits out from the wall and down from the ceiling. Use this measurement to draw a pencil line along the entire wall perimeter at ceiling height, and a corresponding line on the ceiling. These two parallel lines define exactly where the back edges of the coving will sit, giving you a precise gluing surface and preventing misalignment as you work your way around the room.

Cut the internal and external corner mitres
Internal corners (inside corners of a room) need a 45° mitre cut so that two lengths meet cleanly. Place the coving upside-down in a mitre box — ceiling face against the base of the box, wall face against the upright — and cut left and right pieces as a mirror pair. External corners (bay windows, chimney-breast reveals) use the same 45° angle but the cut direction is reversed. Always cut slightly long and test-fit before applying adhesive; you can trim, but you cannot add length back.

Apply adhesive and fix the straight runs first
Squeeze or trowel coving adhesive onto both the wall and ceiling contact faces of the moulding. Press the length firmly onto the guide lines and twist slightly to spread the adhesive evenly. Drive one or two temporary support nails below the coving to hold it while the adhesive grabs. Wipe away squeeze-out immediately with a damp cloth before it skins over. Work the straight runs first, then tackle the corners last — this is the order that minimises waste.

Fit and fill the corners
Offer up the mitre-cut corner pieces and check the joint tightness. Small gaps of 1–2 mm are normal and will be invisible once filled; gaps wider than 3 mm indicate a mis-cut and the piece should be re-cut. Once you are satisfied with the fit, apply adhesive and fix the corner pieces the same way as the straight runs. Once cured, use a flexible interior filler or decorator's caulk to close any remaining gaps at the corner joint and along the top and bottom edges where coving meets ceiling and wall.

Sand, prime, and paint
Once all adhesive and filler has fully cured (leave overnight for plaster coving), lightly sand any ridges with 120-grit paper. Apply one coat of diluted PVA or a proprietary mist coat to seal plaster or EPS coving before emulsioning. Finish with two coats of the same ceiling or wall paint — or a contrasting colour if the design calls for it. Use a small cutting-in brush to stay crisp on the wall and ceiling edges.

- Can I fit coving over an existing textured or artex ceiling?
- Yes, but you need to scrape or sand away the texture in the contact zone (the two strips your guide lines define) before applying adhesive. Bonding directly onto textured surfaces leads to poor adhesion and eventual sagging.
