Corner beads are the hidden heroes of a clean plaster finish — they protect exposed external corners from impact and give plasterers a straight edge to skim against. What is a corner bead and why does it matter?

A corner bead (also called angle bead or angle staff) is a thin strip of galvanised metal or plastic-and-mesh that is fixed along every external plaster corner before the finish coat is applied. It performs two jobs at once: it creates a perfectly straight, 90-degree arris that the plasterer can rule off against, and it armours that corner against the knocks that are almost inevitable in busy homes, rental properties, and hotel corridors.

Without a bead, a hand-formed plaster corner is fragile and rarely truly straight. It chips on first contact with a piece of furniture or a suitcase wheel, and the repair almost always shows. Fitted properly, a beaded corner lasts the full life of the plasterwork.

Types of corner bead and when to use each

The most common type is the traditional galvanised steel angle bead, which is fixed with plaster dabs or masonry nails and then overcoated with finish plaster. For plasterboard (drywall) partitions, a thin-coat metal bead or a paper-faced corner tape is often preferred because the board is already at the correct level and only a very thin skim will be applied. A third option — the clip-on or snap-on plastic bead — has become popular for speed: it grips the plasterboard edge mechanically and needs no fixings, though it is less suited to rough masonry backgrounds.

For the brick and block walls that are common in Greek construction (especially older properties), the traditional galvanised steel bead fixed with plaster dabs is the right choice. On newer plasterboard partitions or ceilings, a paper-faced or thin-coat bead gives a flatter finish under the skim coat.

How to fit a corner bead: step-by-step

    Prepare the substrate and measure the height

    Before touching a bead, make sure the background is clean, dust-free, and sound. Loose plaster or friable render must be hacked back. Measure the full height (or length) of the corner you are beading, add 10 mm, and cut the bead with tin snips or angle grinder — a straight cut at the top, then a small 45-degree snip at the very tip so it does not dig into the plaster above. Cut multiple beads to length before you start mixing anything.

    Mix a small batch of bonding or finish plaster for the dabs

    For a masonry wall, mix a firm but workable batch of browning or bonding plaster — or use the same finish plaster you will skim with later if you are working in one coat. The dabs need to be stiff enough to hold the bead in position while you plumb it; too wet and it will slide. Apply three to four generously sized dabs per metre of bead height, spacing them evenly down each flange (the two flat wings of the bead that sit against the wall).

    Position the bead and plumb it in both planes

    Press the bead firmly against the corner so both flanges sit flat on the wall, then place a long spirit level (at least 1.2 m) against the nose — the raised central rib — and check it is perfectly plumb. Adjust by pressing or easing the flanges until the level reads true. Also hold the level horizontally across the nose to confirm the bead is not twisted or bowed outward. Once satisfied, press the flanges firmly into the dabs so the bead is locked in position. The nose should project just enough to match the thickness of the finish coat you intend to apply — typically 2–3 mm for a single skim.

    Secure with additional dabs and allow to set

    Run a few extra plaster dabs along each flange, working them in with your trowel to close any gaps and bed the mesh (if your bead has mesh wings) firmly into the background. If the bead has pre-punched holes rather than mesh flanges, you can also tap a couple of galvanised clout nails or masonry nails through the holes into the background for extra security. Stand back and re-check plumb once more before leaving it to set — this is your last chance to adjust without remixing. Allow at least 30–45 minutes for the dabs to firm up before skimming.

    Skim against the bead nose to finish the corner

    Once the dabs have set, apply your finish plaster coat in the normal way, using the nose of the bead as your screed rail. Rule off horizontally across the face of the wall with a feather edge or straight darby, reading off the bead nose on one side and either another bead or a floating coat on the other. The bead nose becomes the depth guide and the straight edge simultaneously. Finish with a trowel or plastic float to a smooth, flat surface. The bead nose should end up just flush with or very slightly proud of the finished plaster surface — if it is sunk below, the corner will look hollow and chip more easily.

Can I use corner beads on curved or splayed corners?
Standard 90-degree angle beads are rigid and only suit square external corners. For columns, curved walls, or non-90-degree angles, specialist flexible corner beads or flexible paper-faced tape are available. These can be bent to the required radius or angle before fixing. For very complex profiles — such as feature columns in a hotel lobby — a plasterer may form the arris by hand using a purpose-made profile screed instead of a mass-produced bead.
Do I need to prime or seal the wall before fitting the bead?
On absorbent masonry backgrounds (old brick, lightweight block, or re-rendered surfaces), applying a diluted PVA bonding agent or a dedicated bonding primer before the plaster dabs improves adhesion significantly and reduces the risk of the dabs pulling away before they set. Let the primer become tacky — usually 20–30 minutes — before applying the dabs. On plasterboard, a PVA seal is not normally required for the bead fixings, but the board surface should be mist-coated with diluted PVA before the skim coat is applied.
When should I call a professional plasterer rather than doing this myself?
Fitting corner beads is one of the more accessible plastering tasks, but the finish skim coat that follows demands practice. If you have never plastered before, a misapplied skim coat is difficult to correct without making things worse. For holiday rentals and hotel rooms in Greece — where the finish is scrutinised by guests — it is generally worth hiring a qualified plasterer (οικοδόμος or γυψαδόρος) to at least apply the final coat. If the corner is on a structural wall that has been altered or shows signs of movement or damp, have a structural engineer or licensed building contractor assess it before any cosmetic work begins, as replastering over an active crack or damp source will fail quickly.
