How to Fit a Breakfast Bar: A Room-by-Room Guide

A breakfast bar is one of the highest-value upgrades you can make to a kitchen — it adds casual dining without the footprint of a full table, and in Greek holiday rentals and apartments it is often the only dedicated eating surface guests use. What type of breakfast bar suits your space?

There are three common configurations: a peninsula overhang (the worktop extends past a run of base units by 250–400 mm and stools slide underneath), a wall-mounted folding shelf (a single bracket-mounted slab that drops flat when not in use), and a freestanding island with an overhang on one side. For most Greek apartments and compact holiday rentals, the peninsula overhang is the most practical because it requires no new structural element — the existing units bear the load.

Typical overhang depths are 250 mm for a knee-under perch, 300–350 mm for a comfortable seated position with a standard 680–720 mm stool, and 400–450 mm for full-depth seating. If you want an overhang deeper than 400 mm on a laminate or timber worktop, you will need a corbel bracket or recessed steel flat bar to prevent sagging over time.

Materials, permits, and when to call a professional

Most breakfast bar installations are non-structural and require no Greek building permit (οικοδομική άδεια) — you are fitting a worktop to existing cabinetry, not altering load-bearing walls or rerouting utilities. However, if the bar will be plumbed (for a bar sink), involve electrical sockets on the surface, or require cutting through a masonry wall to create a pass-through opening, a licensed plumber or electrician must carry out that portion of the work. Opening or widening a structural wall to create an open-plan pass-through requires a structural engineer's assessment before any cutting begins — do not rely on a visual guess about whether a wall is load-bearing.

For the worktop itself the most common materials in Greece are post-formed laminate (cheapest, widely available at IKEA, Leroy Merlin, and Praktiker), solid timber (oak, pine, beech), and compact laminate or porcelain slabs (heavier, more upmarket, requires a professional templating and cutting service). For a DIY first build, 40 mm post-formed laminate or 40 mm oak-effect laminate worktop is the easiest to cut accurately with a jigsaw or circular saw and a fine-tooth blade.

How to fit a peninsula breakfast bar overhang: step by step

    Measure and plan the overhang

    Mark the finished depth of the overhang on your existing worktop or the top of the end panel of your base units. Standard stool heights are 680–720 mm for a 900 mm bar height (a standard 870–900 mm tall worktop position) or 760–780 mm for a 1050 mm bar-height counter. Decide your depth, then add the existing worktop depth to get the total width of material you need. Sketch the profile including any return corners, and add 10 mm all round for final trimming.

    Cut the worktop to size

    Fix the worktop blank to a pair of sawhorses with the finish face down (this prevents the blade from chipping the laminate face on the upstroke). Use a fine-tooth jigsaw blade (minimum 80 TPI) or a circular saw with a crosscut blade, and clamp a straight-edge guide to keep the cut perfectly square. Cut slowly — do not force the saw. Where the bar meets a wall, scribe the worktop to the wall profile using a compass set to the widest gap, then cut to the scribed line so there is no gap behind.

    Support the overhang correctly

    For overhangs up to 300 mm, the existing base unit carcass top rail is usually sufficient if you glue and screw the worktop down through the rail with 35 mm screws from inside the cabinet (pre-drill to avoid splitting). For 300–400 mm overhangs, fit two heavy-duty corbel brackets (rated at least 40 kg each) to the side panel of the last base unit or to the wall, spaced evenly across the overhang width. For overhangs over 400 mm, route a 15×15 mm channel into the underside of the worktop and epoxy-bed a flat steel bar that extends back 600 mm into the cabinet carcass — this is the only reliable method to prevent long-term droop.

    Fix and seal all edges

    Apply matching PVC edge banding or solid wood lipping to any exposed cut edges using a hot-melt edge bander or a household iron set to medium-high — press firmly and trim flush with a sharp chisel and block plane. Where the worktop butts a wall, apply a continuous bead of neutral-cure silicone sealant (not acrylic) in a colour matching the worktop. This prevents moisture infiltrating the chipboard core, which will swell and delaminate in a kitchen environment. In bathrooms or areas with higher humidity, use a solid timber worktop or compact laminate rather than chipboard-core laminate.

    Install stools and do a load check

    Fit bar stools that match the counter height — 680–720 mm seat height for a 900 mm counter, 760–780 mm for a 1050 mm counter. Once everything is in place, test the installation: apply your full body weight to the outer edge of the overhang and check for flex. A properly braced 40 mm laminate overhang of 350 mm should deflect less than 2 mm under a 100 kg point load. Any noticeable spring or creak means the fixing to the carcass is insufficient and you should add a corbel bracket before use.

FAQ

Do I need a building permit to fit a breakfast bar in Greece?
In almost all cases, no. Fitting a worktop overhang to existing cabinets is cosmetic joinery and falls well below the threshold that triggers a permit under Greek building regulations (Νέος Οικοδομικός Κανονισμός). The exception is if the work involves opening or widening a wall opening, in which case you need a structural engineer's sign-off and potentially a permit from the local planning office (ΥΔΟΜ).
How long should the overhang be without extra support?
A 40 mm thick laminate or solid timber worktop can cantilever reliably up to 300 mm past the last support point (the carcass top rail or a bracket) without additional bracing. Beyond 300 mm and certainly beyond 400 mm, you need either corbel brackets fixed to the wall or carcass, or a recessed steel flat bar glued into the underside. Do not rely on the worktop material alone for deeper overhangs — chipboard-core laminates will gradually sag under repeated load.
Can I fit a breakfast bar if my kitchen has tiled walls?
Yes. Drilling into ceramic tiles requires a carbide tile bit at low speed with no hammer function to avoid cracking. Mark the drill point with masking tape (stops the bit wandering on the glaze), start slowly, and only switch to hammer mode once you hit the underlying masonry or plasterboard. Avoid drilling into grout lines where possible as they are weaker. Silicone sealant at the wall joint will cover any minor chips at the edge of the worktop.
