Either way, each fuse or breaker is supposed to protect exactly one circuit — a cluster of sockets, a lighting ring, a fixed appliance such as a boiler or air-conditioning unit.
When the board is unlabelled, a tripped breaker means guessing: you flip one, walk across the apartment, find the wrong room, walk back, repeat. In a holiday rental with guests checking in that evening, or in a small hotel with occupied rooms, that delay is costly. A completed panel map turns a five-minute mystery into a ten-second fix.

Mapping circuits is observation work, not electrical work. You are turning breakers on and off at the panel and checking what loses power — no wiring is touched, no covers removed beyond the hinged door of the board itself. This is well within what a careful homeowner or property manager can do safely.
However, any follow-up work — replacing a fuse, adding a breaker, rewiring a circuit, or correcting a fault — requires a licensed electrician (ηλεκτρολόγος) in Greece. The same applies if you open the board and see scorching, smell burning insulation, or notice wires that appear loose or melted. Gather your tools and a helper
You need a notepad or printed panel-map template, a pencil, a working plug-in lamp or phone charger, and ideally a second person. The helper stays in the rooms while you work the panel — or you can use a walkie-talkie app on two phones. Having a torch (flashlight) on you is sensible: the area near the panel can go dark when you trip the main breaker.

Photograph the panel before you touch anything
Open the board's hinged door and take a clear photo of the current state, including any existing labels, the position of each breaker (on or off), and the amperage markings. This gives you a baseline to return to if anything goes wrong and records which breakers were already in the off position (a deliberately isolated circuit — perhaps a pool pump or a spare room — should stay noted separately).

Number every breaker with sticky labels
Stick a small numbered label — 1, 2, 3… — next to each fuse or MCB from top-left to bottom-right (or follow whatever physical order makes sense on your board). This numbering is temporary: it just gives you a reference during the mapping session. Note the amperage printed on each MCB (6 A for lighting, 16 A for sockets, 25–32 A for cookers or boilers are typical Greek ratings).

Switch off one breaker at a time and record what goes dead
Starting with breaker number 1, flip it off. Walk — or have your helper check — every room in the property for lost power: lights that went out, sockets that stopped supplying the test lamp, appliances that lost their display. Write every affected item against breaker 1. Turn it back on, confirm everything restores, then move to breaker 2. Work through every breaker this way. Take your time — a typical apartment has 8–14 breakers and the full survey takes 30–60 minutes.

Write permanent labels and make a paper map
Once every circuit is documented, create clear, permanent labels using a label printer or neat handwriting on adhesive tape. Use plain language: 'Kitchen sockets', 'Living room lights', 'Master bedroom A/C', 'Water heater', 'Outdoor sockets'. Stick the labels directly on the panel door next to the corresponding breakers. Then draw or print a simple floor-plan key and laminate it — tape one copy inside the board door and keep another with the property documents or welcome folder for guests and maintenance staff.

- Is it safe to flip circuit breakers on and off repeatedly during the mapping process?
- Yes — MCBs are designed to be switched thousands of times and brief off-on cycles during mapping cause no harm to the breaker or the wiring. The only exception is circuits feeding sensitive equipment such as a NAS drive, a DVR, or a medical device: warn anyone using those devices before you switch their circuit.
- What if flipping one breaker kills power to almost everything in the flat?
- That is the main switch or a sub-main breaker, not a branch circuit. It protects a group of circuits below it rather than individual outlets. Leave it labelled as 'Main' or 'Floor sub-main' and do not include it in the individual circuit mapping.
