How to Descale an Electric Shower and Keep It Running Well

Limescale is the silent enemy of electric showers across Greece, especially in hard-water areas like Attica, the Cyclades, and Crete, where mineral-heavy mains water leaves chalky deposits inside the shower head and heating element with every use. Left untreated, scale reduces water pressure, cuts shower temperature, shortens the life of the heating element, and eventually leads to a complete unit failure. Why Limescale Is Worse in Greece Than in Northern Europe

Greek mains water typically carries calcium and magnesium concentrations well above the EU average. In island locations, water hardness can exceed 400 mg/L (as CaCO₃), meaning a thick scale layer can form inside a shower head in as little as four to six weeks of daily use. Holiday rentals and hotels are especially vulnerable because high occupancy accelerates mineral build-up while routine maintenance is often overlooked.

The two places scale attacks are the shower head nozzles (visible as white crust and reduced jet pressure) and the heating element inside the electric shower unit itself (invisible until the shower starts producing lukewarm water or tripping the circuit breaker). Both need attention, but they are very different jobs.

What You Can Safely Do Yourself and What You Cannot

Removing and soaking the shower head is a straightforward DIY task that requires no tools beyond an adjustable spanner and a bowl. Descaling the heating element inside the shower unit is a different matter: it requires opening a mains-voltage enclosure. Greek law and IEC 60364 standards require that any work on fixed mains electrical installations, including removing the cover of a shower unit connected to a 230 V circuit, is carried out by a licensed electrician. Do not open the shower unit casing yourself.

How to Descale Your Electric Shower: 5 Steps

    Turn off the shower and prepare your descaling solution

    Switch the shower off and leave it for five minutes so the head cools. Mix two heaped tablespoons of citric acid powder into approximately one litre of hot but not boiling water. Citric acid is preferable to white vinegar because it is stronger, odourless, and leaves no residue. Commercial limescale removers labelled safe for chrome are also effective, but always check the manufacturer's compatibility list for your shower head finish.

    Remove the shower head and soak it

    Wrap a cloth around the shower arm connection to protect the chrome, then unscrew the head counter-clockwise by hand or with an adjustable spanner. Submerge the entire head in the citric acid solution for 30 minutes. For heavy scale, extend the soak to one hour. If the head is a fixed or ceiling-mounted type that cannot be removed, fill a zip-lock bag with the solution, place it over the head so all nozzles are submerged, and secure it with an elastic band or cable tie.

    Clean the flow restrictor and nozzles

    After soaking, scrub the nozzle face with an old toothbrush in circular motions. Loosened scale will come away easily. Look inside the inlet for a small plastic disc with a central hole: this is the flow restrictor. Pull it out with needle-nose pliers, rinse it under the tap, and clear any debris from the central aperture before reinstalling it.

    Reattach the head and flush the system

    Wrap two turns of PTFE thread tape clockwise around the shower arm thread before screwing the head back on. Hand-tighten, then add a quarter-turn with the spanner. Switch the shower on at full cold flow for 30 seconds to flush any residual descaling solution and loosened deposits out before you step in.

    Monitor performance and call a licensed electrician if problems persist

    If pressure and temperature return to normal, schedule this routine every two to three months in hard-water areas. If the shower still runs cool, fluctuates in temperature, or trips the circuit breaker after the head has been descaled, the heating element or solenoid valve inside the unit is likely scaled up. Contact a licensed electrician to open the unit, test the element resistance, and descale or replace the tank. This is mains electrical work and must not be attempted by an untrained person.

How often should I descale my electric shower in Greece?
In hard-water areas such as most of Athens, the Aegean islands, and Crete, descale the shower head every two to three months. In softer-water regions such as parts of northern Greece, every four to six months is usually sufficient. If you notice reduced jet pressure or white crust on the nozzles, descale immediately regardless of the schedule.
Can I use white vinegar instead of citric acid?
Yes, white vinegar works and is readily available, but it is weaker than citric acid and has a strong smell that can linger. It is safe for stainless steel and chrome finishes. Avoid using undiluted vinegar on nickel or gold finishes, as prolonged exposure can cause discolouration. Citric acid is the preferred option for rental properties and hotels where guests may notice odours.
My shower runs cold after only a minute. Is that a limescale problem?
Rapid temperature drop in an electric shower is a classic sign that the heating element is coated in scale, reducing its ability to transfer heat to the water. The shower thermal cut-out may also be activating to protect the unit. This is not fixable by descaling the shower head alone. A licensed electrician needs to inspect and service the heating tank inside the unit. Ignoring it risks element burnout and a much more expensive repair.
