How to Adjust uPVC Door Hinges Without Calling a Locksmith

A uPVC door that drags on the frame, lets in a draught, or refuses to close smoothly is one of the most common maintenance complaints in Greek homes, holiday rentals, and hotels. The good news is that every uPVC door hinge has three built-in adjustment axes, and all you need to correct the problem is an Allen key and about fifteen minutes. Why uPVC Door Hinges Fall Out of Alignment

uPVC frames expand and contract with temperature, and in Greece that swing can be dramatic — from a cold winter morning in the mountains to a 38 °C August afternoon on a coastal rental terrace. Over time, the weight of a heavy double-glazed sash also causes hinges to creep downward, pulling the door out of the frame opening. The result is a door that either drops and scrapes the threshold or shifts sideways and compresses unevenly against the seal.

Unlike timber doors that swell and require planing, uPVC doors almost never need replacing or recutting. The hinges themselves carry all the adjustment range you need.

Flag Hinges vs Butt Hinges: Spot the Difference

Flag hinges are the most common type on modern uPVC doors in Greece. They sit on the face of the frame and the sash, with the knuckle projecting outward so the door swings clear of the frame. Butt hinges are recessed into the frame and sash edge and look more like traditional interior-door hinges. Both types offer the same three-axis adjustment, but the grub screw positions differ slightly, so it is worth identifying which type you have before you reach for the Allen key.

On flag hinges, the adjustment screws are typically accessed from the side of the hinge plate. On butt hinges, you may need to open the door fully and look at the hinge face-on to find the hex recesses.

The Three-Axis Adjustment Method: Step by Step

    Identify the binding or gap and gather your tools

    Close the door slowly and watch where it contacts the frame first. A drop shows at the latch side bottom; a sideways drift shows as an uneven gap along the seal. You will need a 3 mm or 4 mm Allen key (hex key) — check both sizes against the grub screws before starting. No other tools are required.

    Adjust the height (vertical axis)

    Open the door to around 90 degrees so the hinge is accessible and not under load. Locate the vertical adjustment screw on the hinge — on flag hinges this is usually the central or lower grub screw. Turning it clockwise raises the sash; anti-clockwise lowers it. Make quarter-turn increments, then close the door to check progress. Aim for an even gap of roughly 2–3 mm at the top and bottom of the sash.

    Adjust the side-to-side position (lateral axis)

    The lateral screw moves the sash toward or away from the hinge side of the frame. Turning it one way pulls the door closer to the hinges; the other pushes it toward the latch. This is the adjustment to make if the door presses tightly against the frame on the hinge side while leaving a gap on the latch side, or vice versa. Again, work in small increments and check the gap after each turn.

    Adjust the compression (depth axis)

    The compression screw controls how firmly the sash presses against the weather seal when closed. Too little compression and the door will not seal properly against wind or rain — a real problem in exposed Greek coastal properties. Too much and the door becomes hard to close and the seal wears out prematurely. Adjust this last, once height and lateral position are correct. The door should close with light pressure and hold a sheet of paper firmly anywhere around its perimeter.

    Lock off the adjustments and test under load

    Once all three axes are set correctly, tighten any locking grub screws if your hinge model has them — some budget hinges have a second screw that clamps the adjustment in place. Open and close the door ten times at normal speed, then check the gaps again. Finally, test the multipoint lock: the handle should lift smoothly and the lock points should engage without forcing. If the lock suddenly feels stiff after hinge adjustment, the door has shifted relative to the keep plates and you may need to adjust the keeps slightly or repeat the depth adjustment.

How do I know which Allen key size fits my uPVC hinges?
Most European uPVC hinges use either a 3 mm or 4 mm hex key. Try both before applying force — the correct size will seat fully without play. Using the wrong size risks rounding the grub screw recess, which makes future adjustment difficult.
Can I adjust the hinges on a door that is still hanging and in use?
Yes, and that is the normal way to do it. You work with the door open at 90 degrees to access the hinge, then close it to check the result after each small adjustment. You do not need to remove the door or the hinges.

If the door has been misaligned for a long time, the keep plates (the metal strike plates on the frame that the lock bolts enter) may also need repositioning.
