When that height is set too high, water silently spills into the overflow tube and runs continuously down the bowl — a constant drain on your water bill. Flush the toilet once to empty the tank, then look for the water mark or mark the current level with a pencil on the inside tank wall. The correct fill level is typically 2.5 cm (about 1 inch) below the top of the overflow tube — you can measure this now as your target.

Remove the tank lid and locate the fill valve
Lift the ceramic lid off the tank carefully and set it aside on a flat surface — these lids crack easily. Identify the fill valve, which is the tall component connected to the supply line at the bottom of the tank. On a float-cup valve you will see a plastic adjustment ring or screw near the top; on a ball-cock valve you will see a long horizontal arm with a hollow plastic or rubber ball at the far end.

Make the adjustment for your valve type
Float-cup valve: grip the fill valve column with one hand and twist the adjustment top counter-clockwise about a quarter turn to unlock it, then slide the float cup up (to raise the water level) or down (to lower it), and twist clockwise to lock. Once the tank has refilled to the correct level, flush the toilet and watch the bowl. A properly filled tank should produce a strong swirling flush that completely clears the bowl in one cycle. If the flush is still weak, the level may be marginally low — raise it by 5 mm at a time until performance improves. Replace the tank lid and turn on a full cycle of water to confirm no running sound remains after the tank finishes filling.

- The clearest sign is the sound of water running continuously even when nobody has flushed. Open the tank lid and check whether water is trickling down into the overflow tube — the tall open cylinder in the centre of the tank. If water is entering that tube, your fill level is set above the safe threshold and needs to be lowered.
