Mulch reduces surface evaporation by up to 70 percent, keeps soil temperature stable, and slows down the weed growth that would otherwise compete for the moisture the hose is delivering. Leave a small gap around plant stems to prevent rot. Without mulch, water from a soaker hose evaporates from the soil surface almost as fast as it is delivered on a hot afternoon.

    Connect a simple battery-powered hose timer to your tap before the pressure regulator. How long should I run a soaker hose each time in summer?
In Greece's summer heat, 30–45 minutes per session is usually enough for raised vegetable beds, provided you run it daily or every other day. The goal is to wet the top 20 cm of soil. Check by pushing a finger or thin stick into the soil an hour after watering — if it is damp at that depth, your timing is correct. Sandy soils need shorter, more frequent cycles; clay-heavy soils can handle longer, less frequent runs.
Can I leave a soaker hose in place over winter?
In most of mainland Greece and on the islands, soaker hoses can stay in the ground through mild winters with no damage. If you are in a region that experiences ground frost — northern Greece, high-altitude areas, or Thessaly in a cold year — drain the hose completely by removing the end cap and letting it empty, then store it coiled indoors.
