How to Graft a Lemon Tree Using T-Budding

Why T-Budding Works for Lemon Trees

T-budding — sometimes called shield budding — is the standard commercial method for grafting citrus because it requires only one bud from the donor tree, heals quickly in warm weather, and has a high success rate even for beginners. Unlike cleft or whip-and-tongue grafts that demand matched stem diameters, T-budding works on rootstock as slender as a pencil, which means you can start earlier in the season when the bark is slipping freely.

In Greece the ideal window runs from late March through May and again from August into September, when daytime temperatures sit above 20 °C and the bark of your rootstock separates easily from the cambium underneath. Avoid midsummer heat peaks above 38 °C, which dry out the exposed tissue before the graft can knit.

Choosing Rootstock and Bud Wood

The most reliable rootstock for lemons in Greek conditions is Citrus volkameriana, which tolerates calcareous soils and periodic drought better than sour orange, though sour orange (Citrus aurantium) remains common in older groves and still performs well in coastal regions. Your rootstock plant should be one to two years old, healthy, and roughly 8–12 mm in diameter at the budding point — about 20–30 cm above the soil line.

Bud wood must come from a disease-free mother tree that is actively producing the variety you want. Choose a shoot that has recently matured — the leaves should feel firm rather than soft, and the buds should be plump and clearly formed. Cut 20–30 cm pencil-thick shoots in the morning, strip the leaves immediately but leave the petiole stubs as handles, then wrap the wood in a damp cloth and work within a few hours.

T-Budding a Lemon Tree: Step by Step

    Prepare your tools and rootstock

    Sterilise a sharp budding knife and a pair of pruning shears with 70% alcohol and let them air-dry. Clean a 10 cm section of the rootstock stem at the budding height — about 25 cm above the soil — with a damp cloth to remove dust and dried sap. The bark must feel turgid; if it crinkles when you press it the rootstock needs watering the day before.

    Cut the T-incision into the rootstock

    Make a clean vertical cut about 2.5 cm long through the bark, pressing just deep enough to touch the pale cambium without scoring the wood beneath. Then make a horizontal cut across the top of the vertical cut to form a T shape. Gently lift the two flaps of bark with the flat spine of the budding knife so they stand slightly away from the wood — this pocket receives the bud shield.

    Slice the bud shield from the donor wood

    Position your knife about 1.5 cm below the chosen bud on the donor shoot and make a smooth scooping cut upward, ending about 1.5 cm above the bud. The shield should carry a thin sliver of wood behind the bark; this is acceptable and sometimes increases success. Hold the shield by the petiole stub only — skin oils from your fingers can kill the exposed cambium. Trim the top of the shield straight so it will sit flush in the T.

    Insert the shield and align the cambium

    Slide the shield down into the T pocket until the top of the shield sits level with the horizontal cut. If the shield is slightly too long, trim it flush rather than forcing it. The critical contact is on both sides where the green cambium layer of the shield meets the cambium layer exposed inside the rootstock flaps. Gently press the bark flaps back over the shield.

    Wrap, label, and monitor the graft

    Wrap the entire union firmly with budding tape or polyethylene strip, working from below the T upward and leaving only the bud eye exposed. The wrap holds moisture and pressure so the two cambium layers fuse. After two to three weeks, check whether the petiole stub falls away when nudged — if it does, the bud is alive. Cut the tape, and once the bud swells and pushes a new shoot, cut the rootstock stem off just above the union to redirect all growth through your new lemon variety.

How long does it take for a T-bud graft to take on a lemon tree?
In Greek summer conditions — warm nights and days above 25 °C — the cambium layers fuse in two to three weeks. You will know the graft has taken when the leaf-stalk stub yellows and drops cleanly at a touch. If the bud shrivels and turns brown instead, the graft has failed and you can try again on another part of the rootstock or wait for the next suitable season window.
Can I graft onto an established lemon tree that is already in the ground?
