How to Build a Dry Stone Retaining Wall: 5 Steps

Dig a foundation trench roughly 20–30 cm deep and slightly wider than your intended wall base — for a wall up to 1 metre tall, plan a base width of at least 60–70 cm. Remove all loose topsoil until you reach firm, compacted subsoil or bedrock. Rake the trench level and tamp it down; a solid, level base prevents the entire wall from tilting forward over time.

    Set the First Course with Your Largest Stones

    Place your heaviest, flattest stones along the full length of the trench, laying them with their longest dimension running back into the slope (called 'tie stones'). These anchor the wall into the hillside and resist the forward push of retained soil. Leave no large gaps between stones at this course; fill any voids tightly with smaller hearting stones. Check with a spirit level every metre or so — a level first course is the foundation of a straight wall.

    Build Up Courses with a Backward Batter

    As you add courses, lean each layer very slightly back into the slope — roughly 25–50 mm of inward tilt for every 300 mm of height. This backward batter (or 'rake') is critical: it shifts the centre of gravity into the hillside and dramatically increases the wall's stability. Stagger vertical joints between courses exactly as a bricklayer would, so no continuous crack runs from top to bottom. Place a tie stone every metre along each course to bond the outer face to the core.

    Pack the Core and Backfill Behind the Wall

    The space between the two outer faces, and the zone directly behind the wall, must be packed with smaller hearting stones — not soil. This rubble core locks the outer faces together and, crucially, acts as a free-draining layer that prevents water pressure from building up behind the wall. Once each course of core is packed, backfill the retained slope side with coarse gravel or crushed stone before adding the next soil layer. Good drainage is the single biggest factor in how long a dry stone wall lasts.

    Finish with Coping Stones and Plant the Wall

    Top the wall with your heaviest, flattest stones laid on edge or flat — these coping stones add weight to the crown, resist frost heave, and give the wall a finished appearance. Once the wall is complete, planting in the joints accelerates the wall's integration into the garden: thyme, aubretia, campanula, and sempervivum all thrive in the dry micro-climate between stones and their roots help bind the structure together. Water the planting in gently for the first season to establish roots without washing fine material out of the joints.
