How to clean an oven (door glass & racks)

Baked-on grease and a foggy door don't need harsh fumes. Here's how to clean the inside, the glass and the racks with baking soda.

Most oven grime softens overnight with a simple baking-soda paste, so the actual scrubbing is minimal. The video above shows the hacks for the glass and racks; the steps below put them in order so you can leave it to work and come back.

What you'll need

Baking soda, white vinegar in a spray bottle, washing-up liquid, a cloth and a non-scratch scrubber. Skip the caustic oven sprays for routine cleaning — the paste is gentler and almost as fast.

Clean your oven in 5 steps

  1. 1

    Take the racks out

Remove the racks and anything else loose so you can reach the whole interior.

  2. 2

Coat the inside with baking-soda paste

Mix baking soda with a little water into a spreadable paste and smear it over the interior (avoid the heating element and fan). Leave it overnight, or at least a few hours.

  3. 3

    Soak the racks

Lay the racks in a bath or big tub of hot water with a scoop of baking soda or a dishwasher tablet. Leave them to soak while the oven sits.

  4. 4

    Clean the door glass

Spread the paste on the inside glass, leave 15–30 minutes, then wipe. To reach between the panes, many oven doors have a gap along the bottom edge you can slide a thin microfibre cloth through.

  5. 5

Wipe out and de-fog with vinegar

Wipe the dried paste out of the oven, then spray white vinegar to fizz away the last residue and buff to a streak-free finish. Scrub and rinse the soaked racks.

FAQ

How do I clean between the oven door glass?
Look for a slot along the bottom of the door; slide a thin cloth or a flat tool wrapped in microfibre through it. On some doors the inner panel unclips — check your manual before forcing it.
Can I just use the self-clean function?
Pyrolytic self-clean works but runs very hot, smells, and won't clean the door glass or racks. The baking-soda method covers everything with no fumes.
How often should I clean the oven?
A quick wipe after spills, plus a full clean every 1–3 months depending on use, keeps grease from baking on hard.
